new orleans, louisiana january 2006

These photographs were taken in January of 2006, five months after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. These are images of various parts of New Orleans, the Lower Ninth Ward, and the suburban streets of Bernard Parish, and even some images of the FEMA staging ground north of the city. They speak not only to the hugely destructive power of the hurricane, but how also to how far there is yet to go in the recovery process, even five months later.

There are also some pictures of Common Ground Collective, a grassroots rebuilding and preservation organisation working from within the ruins of the Ninth Ward to rebuild the neighborhoods there. They can be found online at http://www.commongroundrelief.org/.
